The Book of Ethereum: The Cultural Layer of Ethereum
Ethereum began not only as a protocol but as a movement. It was created from the desire to coordinate human activity without central authority, to build systems that belong to no one and serve everyone. From its first block in 2015, Ethereum evolved from an idea into what Vitalik Buterin described as a civilizational platform, a neutral foundation where economies, art, and meaning coexist.
Bitcoin introduced digital scarcity, but Ethereum introduced programmable legitimacy. Where Bitcoin protects the ledger, Ethereum protects the possibility to build. Over time, Ethereum has grown into something more than technology: a living ecosystem shaped by openness, pluralism, and collective coordination.
The history of Ethereum has been guided as much by ideas as by upgrades. The Merge and the upcoming Fusaka upgrade show that Ethereum’s strength comes not from control but from consensus. As Vitalik said, the most important scarce resource in the 21st century is legitimacy, and legitimacy in Ethereum arises from culture, from shared rituals, memes, and stories that connect code to human meaning.
Culture is the invisible architecture of coordination. It transforms systems of logic into spaces of belonging. Without culture, decentralization becomes speculation. Without shared myth, networks forget their purpose. Aya Miyaguchi beautifully described Ethereum as an infinite garden, a place without a castle or ruler, where every participant is a gardener.
The Book of Ethereum exists to preserve this garden. It is not a company or a product but a cultural public good that records Ethereum’s values, translates its technologies into meaning, and projects its story into the future. The Book is the cultural layer of Ethereum, aligned with the Ethereum Foundation’s mission to cultivate open experimentation and the public good.
The Book carries three missions. It preserves memory, ensuring that the myths, memes, and milestones of Ethereum are never lost. It translates meaning, making complex ideas like staking, rollups, and zero-knowledge understandable to all. And it projects myth, guiding builders and believers alike toward Ethereum’s shared destiny: the Prophecy.
Ethereum scales computation. The Book of Ethereum scales understanding. We don’t speculate. We inscribe.
